William H. "Billy Doc" Spurrier, 80, of Owensboro, died Saturday, April 17, 2010 at Hillcrest Nursing Home. Mr. Spurrier, a native of Daviess County, was born to the late Ollie J. and Mary Lee (Barrett) Spurrier. He was a retired manager of commercial sales for Western Kentucky Gas Co., a member of Pleasant Grove United Methodist Church, and was a veteran of the U.S. Marines. He also worked as an assistant manager of commercial sales for Texas Gas for 6 years, was a member of the American Gas and Southern Gas Associations, and past president of the American Gas Association. He was a Kentucky Colonel, and past treasurer of Thruston -Dermont Fire Department, helped establish Philpot Fire Department, and was past president of Daviess County High Band Boosters, was on the building committee when St. Andrews Presbyterian Church was built, was a member of the Owensboro Chapter of NRHS Railway Club. Above all he treasured his family and adored his beloved grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a twin brother; James Barrett Spurrier in 1929.
Surviving is his wife of 55 years; Meta Jo Spurrier, a son; Jim (Lisa) Spurrier, of Beech Grove, daughters; Leah (Claud) Day and Jane Nishimori of Owensboro, grandchildren; Dr. Wesley (Meg) Spurrier, Amber Spurrier, Brienna Meffert, Jolene and Jessalynn Spurrier, Dexter, Austin and Matthew Day, and Ryon Nishimori, a great-granddaughter; Magnolia Jean Spurrier, two sisters-in-law; Janis Greene of Jeffersonville, IN. and Jane Miller of Ft. Wayne, IN., a niece and nephew.
A memorial service will be held 2:00 p.m. Thursday, April 22, 2010 at Glenn Funeral Home and Crematory with Rev. Damon Smith officiating. Visitation will be Thursday from 11:00 a.m. until the service. The family has requested the expressions of sympathy may take the form of contributions to Hospice of Western Kentucky or to the United Way of the Ohio Valley.
