William Ellis Smith
William Ellis "Bill" Smith, of Owensboro went to be with the Lord on Monday, December 15, 2008 after a lengthy illness. He was born in Eudora, Arkansas on October 6, 1933.
He was a radio engineer and was a graduate of Bailey Technical Institute and Southeastern Signal School in Camp Gordon, Georgia. He served in the Army in the Far East Signal Service Battalion and was a member of the Over Seas Communication Net. He owned and operated Smith Communications Service from 1980 to 2003.
He was a member of Owensboro Christian Church, The Gideons International, Charter member of Craftsmen Lodge #717, Scottish Rite of Freemasonry, Rizpah Shrine Temple, American Radio Relay League, and Forest Orphans Camp of The Sons of Confederate Veterans.
He was a Bible scholar who also enjoyed ham radio, Civil War history, World War II history, geneology, meeting people, music, fishing, gardening, cooking, his cats, and watching reruns of the Andy Griffith Show.
He is survived by his wife of 34 years, Carson Smith, a son, Greg Smith and wife Lauren of Memphis, Tennessee, a daughter, Janet Chambers and husband David of Taylor, Texas, 10 grandchildren, a brother, Roy Smith and wife Rose of College Station, Texas, and one nephew.
Services will be 10:00 A.M. Tuesday, December 23, at the Glenn Funeral Home Chapel. Burial will follow in Pleasant Grove Cemetery. Visitation will be from 4:00-8:00 P.M. Monday and after 8:30 A.M. Tuesday at the funeral home.
