Dr. William A. McManus, Jr., 91, passed away Friday, December 15, 2017 at his home in Owensboro. Born in Cairo, IL September 16, 1926, Dr. McManus was a graduate of Owensboro High School, Centre College, and the University of Louisville School of Medicine. He served his residency at Charity Hospital in New Orleans. Returning to Owensboro he was a member of the Owensboro Surgical Group from 1958 until 1989. He was a fellow of the American College of Surgeons. He served as Chairman of the Board of Directors of the former Owensboro-Daviess County Hospital. Dr. McManus was a founder of the Free Clinic of Owensboro and was a recipient of the R.C. Neblett M.D. Service Award. For many years he provided care at the Wendell Foster Campus for Developmental Disabilities. For 29 years Dr. McManus volunteered his services as team physician for Kentucky Wesleyan College. He had served as crew chief for a NCAA drug testing team and with the Committee on School Health, Physical Education and Medical Aspects of Sports of the Kentucky Medical Association, of which he was a member. His other professional affiliations included membership in the Daviess County Medical Association and the American Medical Association. He had served as ship's physician for Norwegian Cruise Lines. Dr. McManus was a World War II veteran of the United States Navy. He was preceded in death by his parents William Allen McManus, Sr. and Aimee White Held, and his sister Majorie McManus Hager.
Dr. McManus is survived by his wife, Ann Long McManus; his children Kelly Smith and her husband Jim of Lexington and William Allen McManus, III of Owensboro; and his grandchildren Melissa Ann Smith of Lexington and Andrew McManus of Daytona Beach.
A gathering of family and friends will be at Glenn Funeral Home and Crematory from 12:00 noon until 2:00 p.m. Sunday. A private service of committal and burial will be in Elmwood Cemetery.
