William R. Matthis

May 28, 1955 — November 13, 2013

William (Rick) Matthis, 58, of Philpot, KY, passed away November 13, 2013, at Owensboro Health Regional Hospital. He was born in Owensboro, KY, to James Alfred Matthis, Jr. and E. Jean Gidcumb Matthis, was the owner of Owensboro Auto Electric, served in the United States Air Force, and was a member of both Blessed Mother Catholic Church and First Christian Church. Rick was an avid baker, a loving grandfather, was kind, funny and according to his daughter, "cute as a button". Following Rick's example, for his birthday this year his friends and family honored him by performing one Random Act of Kindness for a stranger, and that is how he lived his life, treating everyone with silent generosity and kindness.
He was preceded in death by his in-laws, Thomas D. and Margaret Hardesty and his brother-in-law, Phillip Hardesty.
Rick is survived by his parents, his wife of 33 years, Margie Matthis; children, William J. Matthis of Charleston, SC, Jeremy D. Matthis and Natalie B. Matthis both of Owensboro; grandchild, Ian J. Heal; siblings, Ron Matthis (Faye), Sam Matthis (Cindy), Mike Matthis (Sally), Carole Starks (Hank), Gina Berry (Ben) and Donna Raley; brother and sister-in-laws; Mike Hardesty (Sandy), Mark Hardesty (Sandy), Paul Hardesty (Gina), Perry Hardesty (Jan), Tina Hardy (Scott), Pam Hardesty, Jeannie Best (Keith), Nancy Hamilton (Mike), Pat Hardesty (Jenny), John Hardesty (Becky), Tony Hardesty (Julie), and Mike Raley; and many nieces and nephews.
Services will be 2 p.m. Friday at Blessed Mother Catholic Church. Visitation will be from 4 p.m. until 8 p.m. on Thursday at Glenn Funeral Home and Crematory and after 10 a.m. on Friday at the funeral home. Prayers will be said at 7 p.m. on Thursday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Resurrection Cemetery.
Expressions of sympathy may take the form of donations to First Christian Church, Back Pack Ministry or by performing your own Random Act of Kindness.
