William S. Jones, 86, of Owensboro, died Wednesday at his home. He was born in Philpot to the late Jasper D. and Suella (Ashby) Jones Whitinghill. He was a claims adjuster for Kentucky Farm Bureau, retiring after 32 years, and a member of the Church of Christ. He was a charter member of Southern Little League and Windridge Country Club, and was an avid golfer. He was a past president of Owensboro Kiwanis Club, organizing and participating in many of the annual radio auctions. A son Grant Jones also preceded him in death.
Surviving is his wife of 30 years, Shirley Smith Jones, a son, Tommy (Dianna) Jones of Owensboro, 3 step-children, Trafta (David) O'Bryan of Louisville, Ted Thompson of Walnut Ridge, Arkansas, and Tammy (Jim) Wilhoyte of Owensboro, sisters, Nelda Gross of Owensboro, and Rebecca Jones Snyder of Gainsville, Florida, a brother, Jack (Doris) Jones of Owensboro, 4 grandchildren, 4 step-grandchildren, 5 great-grandchildren, one great-great grandchild, and one step-great- grandchild, several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be at 6:00 p.m. Saturday, February 20, 2010 at Glenn Funeral Home and Crematory with Jared Jacobs officiating. Visitation will be after 3:30 p.m. Saturday until the funeral service. Interment will be private. The family has asked that expressions of sympathy may take the form of donations to Hospice of Western Kentucky.
