William Geoffry "Skip" Hughes, 72, of Owensboro heard the final buzzer Tuesday, March 24, 2015 at Owensboro Health Regional Hospital. Skip was born and grew up in Hollidaysburg, PA, graduating from Hollidaysburg High School. He was the son of the late Dr. William "Skip" Hughes and Helen Shaffer Hughes. An accomplished athlete, he attended preparatory school at Wake Forest before coming to Owensboro in 1961 to play basketball and baseball on an athletic scholarship at Kentucky Wesleyan College where he was an All American. Until the mid 1980's he held the KWC records for consecutive successful free throws and home runs. While at Kentucky Wesleyan, he met his wife Ruth Ann Howard of Prestonsburg, to whom he would have been married 51 years this April. Following graduation he attended the University of Louisville School Dental School before pursuing another career. Skip retired from Vanguard Utility and maintained his interest in sports. He was an avid golfer who particularly enjoyed the friendship of his golfing buddies.
His survivors include his wife, Ruth Ann Howard Hughes; his children Christopher Howard Hughes of Owensboro and Laura Lynn Hughes Levy of Atlanta; his grandchildren Hannah Hughes and Monica Hughes of Owensboro and Josephine Schaffer Levy and Sophia Pauline Levy of Atlanta; his sister Diane Dickman ofRochester, NY; and his cousin Peter Brannaman of Hollidaysburg, PA.
The service for Mr. Hughes will be 10:00 a.m. Saturday at Glenn Funeral Home and Crematory where visitation will be from 3:00 until 7:00 p.m. Friday and after 9:00 a.m. Saturday.
