William R. Cavin, 92, of Owensboro passed away Friday, October 30, 2015 under the care of Hospice of Western Kentucky. He was born in Owensboro November 25, 1922 to the late James J. and Lucille Wright Cavin.
Bill graduated from Louisville Male High school in 1940. In 1947 he earned a Bachelor of Science degree in business from Indiana University in Bloomington where he was a member of Phi Delta Theta. He was a lieutenant in the U.S. Army Air Corp during World War II; having served as a navigator/bombardier on a B17, 100th Bomb Group, 8th Air Force, Europe. He was a graduate of the Army Command and General Staff College. His last assignment was commanding officer of the 2nd Brigade, 100th Division. His combined service in the active Army and Army Reserve totaled over 32 years. Bill retired in 1995 as a full colonel.
Bill retired as President of Wright Machine Company. He attended and was very involved at Immaculate Catholic Church. Bill was very active in the community. He was former chairman of the Owensboro Municipal Utilities Commission; member of: Executive Board of the Audubon Council of Boy Scouts, Green River Area Development District, Board of Directors, the Cooperative Health Services Board of Owensboro Medical Health System, Owensboro-Daviess County Planning and Zoning Commission; Chairman of the Health Council for GRADD, Vice Chairman of the Kentucky Health System Agency-West, past president of Owensboro Country Club, Chairman of the Community Chest and instrumental in establishing United Way of Owensboro.
Bill was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Jimmy Cavin of Columbus,OH.
He is survived by his wife of 70 years, Elizabeth Shea Cavin; four children, William R. "Rick" Cavin, Jr. (Jinny) of Colorado Springs, CO, Debra C. Bryant of Mobile, AL, Karen Cavin-Brown of Owensboro and John P. Cavin of Louisville, KY; a sister, Carol Druckamiller of Evansville, IN; 8 grandchildren and 8 great-grandchildren.
The memorial Mass will be at 10 AM Tuesday, November 3 at Immaculate Catholic Church.
Fr. Tony Jones will officiate. Private burial will be at Elmwood Cemetery. Visitation will be Monday from 5-8 PM, with prayers at 7:30 PM, at Glenn Funeral Home and Crematory.
