Dr. William W. Carlton, 86
Dr. William "Bill" Walter Carlton, Leslie Morton Hutchings Distinguished Professor Emeritus of Veterinary Pathology, 86, of Owensboro, Kentucky, passed away, Thursday March 24, 2016 at Bethesda Memorial Hospital.
William was born June 17, 1929 in Owensboro, Kentucky to James Henry and Clyde Roxie (Elliott) Carlton. He graduated from Daviess County High School in 1948 and earned bachelor's degrees in animal science and humanities, respectively, from the University of Kentucky and Florida Southern College. He later earned a master's degree in animal physiology at Kentucky and a Doctorate in Veterinary Medicine from Auburn University. He completed a PhD in veterinary pathology from Purdue University in 1963.
After serving on the faculty at MIT, Dr. Carlton joined the Purdue Veterinary Medicine faculty for 28 years and was one of the three co-founders of the Purdue Comparative Oncology Program. As one of the pre-eminent educators in the field of toxicologic pathology, he was considered one of its intellectual founders. Having received the first Achievement Award from the Society of Toxicology in 2006, he was honored for his contributions as a scientist who had significantly influenced the advancement of this medical discipline. He held leadership positions in the International Academy of Pathology, American Association of Pathologists, American Association of Avian Pathologists, Society of Toxicology and the American College of Veterinary Pathologists.
Survivors include his wife Jeanne; his son Ronald and wife Linda; two grandchildren Jeanine Mellish Logan and James Mellish; nieces, nephews, and other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his daughter, Tamar Mellish
A celebration of life service will be held at 3:45 P.M. Saturday, April 6 at Glenn Funeral Home and Crematory. There will be visitation beginning at 3:00 P.M.
