William H. "Bill" Campbell, 86, of Owensboro, passed away on Tuesday, January 30, 2018 at his home. He was born June 28, 1931 in Simpson Co. to the late Joshua and Flora Finn Campbell. Bill was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather, and great great grandfather who deeply loved his family.
Bill came to Owensboro at the age of 16 from McLean Co, where he was raised. He was a self-taught guitar player and played on Radio station W.O.M.I. He was blessed to have two careers, one as a crane operator working out of the Operating Engineers Local L0181B and ultimately retired from the Owensboro Riverport Authority and his other career was playing the guitar. He played throughout the area and was a member of many different bands. Bill was a lead guitar player who was greatly sought after because of his exceptional talent. He was highly respected and considered to be one of the best "Pickers" in this area.
Bill was also preceded in death by his wife Marguerite on July 9, 2014, his only daughter, Tammie Campbell Payne, a grandson, Gary Campbell, a sister, Ruby Boone, and two brothers, Willard Campbell and Garvis Campbell.
Surviving are five sons, Gary (Judy) Campbell of Calhoun, and Richard (Cathy) Campbell, Jeff (Denise) Campbell, Denny (Jill) Campbell, and Danny (Gail) Campbell, all of Owensboro, 18 grandchildren, 38 great grandchildren, and one great great grandchild, four sisters, Louise Jackson of Owensboro, Leuna Hibbs of Radcliff, Sharon Bullock of Vine Grove, and Delores Wood of Louisville, one brother, Tom Campbell of Seymour, IN, and his life-long and best friend, Smokey McCoy of Indianapolis.
A Funeral Mass will be 10:00 A.M. Saturday, February 3, at St. Pius X Catholic Church with burial following in Owensboro Memorial Gardens. Bill's friends may visit with the family from 2:00-8:00 P.M. Friday with prayers at 7:00 P.M. and from 8:30-9:30 A.M. Saturday at Glenn Funeral Home and Crematory.
