Wendell Earl Harpe, 79, of Philpot, passed away on Monday, February 5, while under the care of Hospice of Western Kentucky. He was born March 14, 1938 in Daviess Co. to the late Edmund and Pauline Carter Harpe. Wendell was a member of Pleasant Grove United Methodist Church, had served as the chairman of the Administrative Board, taught Sunday School for 54 years, and was a song leader. Since 2012, Wendell had been attending Trinity United Methodist Church. He had worked in the sheet metal business having owned and operated Harpe and Sons, Inc. which he started in 1979 until he retired. He was a 1956 graduate of Daviess Co. High School where he was the valedictorian and also was involved in sports. He was the president of the Future Farmers of America at the high school.
Wendell was the one of the founding members of the Southern Gospel Quartet called "God's Choir". He was a member of the Order of Kentucky Colonels, was an avid U.K. basketball and Chicago Cubs fan, and enjoyed playing cards.
Wendell was also preceded in death by his first wife, Martha Carolyn Shelton Harpe on May 4, 2007
Surviving are his wife, Nelda Baird Harpe, his children, George "Buck" Harpe and wife Sara of Athens, GA, Robin Roberts and husband Dale of Philpot, Sally Phillips and husband Tracy of Philpot, Sandy Russelburg and husband Rick of Whitesville, Cliff Harpe and wife Rita of Owensboro, and Joshua Harpe and wife Alissa of Carmel. IN, grandchildren, Emily, Betsy, Rachel, Mary, Katie, Taylor, Brad, Nathan, Haley, Hannah, Carter, and Carolyn, great grandchildren, Lex, Danika, Louisa, Lindsey, Savannah, and Ian, a stepson, Todd Roberts and wife Joanna of Whitesville, and a sister, Linda Smith Hatcher of Owensboro.
Services will be Noon Thursday, February 8, at Glenn Funeral Home and Crematory with burial following in Pleasant Grove United Methodist Church Cemetery. Visitation will be from 2:00-8:00 P.M. Wednesday and after 10:00 A.M. Thursday at the funeral home.
