Wayne Curry

June 10, 1939 — April 23, 2008

Wayne Curry, 68, of Owensboro began his journey home Wednesday, April 23, 2008 fighting a courageous battle with cancer until the end. He was born June 10, 1939 in Daviess County, the son of Gilbert and Eva Curry; graduated from Daviess County High School in 1957 where he played quarterback for the school's first football team and was on the basketball team that went to the State Tournament playing at Freedom Hall in March of 1957. He attended Western Kentucky University; enjoyed all motor sports and, when he was younger, drove dragsters, earning the nickname "Socks" because he drove without one shoe so he could better feel the clutch. He also enjoyed traveling with the Yellow Banks Motor Home Group, and especially, loved his second home and family in New Smyrna Beach, FL, where he lived in the winter. Mr. Curry never met a stranger and was noted for telling long stories to any one who would listen. He retired from the Plumbers and Pipefitters Local 663 after 39 years of service and was of the Baptist faith. He was preceded in death by his father, Gilbert Curry.

His family wishes to express their sincere thanks for the care and attention given him by the doctors, especially Dr. Linda Mumford and Dr. Maheshwari, nurses and staff of the Mitchell Cancer Center, and the Oncology Department of Owensboro Medical Health System, Home nurses, and last to Hospice who cared for him in his last days.

He is survived by his wife of 51 years, Mary Maude (Oldham) Curry; sons, Rick (Ginny) Curry of Owensboro and Brent (Donna) Curry of Philpot; a daughter, Debbie Dukes of Owensboro; his mother, Eva Curry of Owensboro; grandchildren, Matt Curry of Atlanta, Jill Curry, Chris Dukes, Lacey Curry, and Jessica Dukes all of Owensboro, and Lynsey Young of Philpot; and great-grandchildren, Jas Marie, Amya, Kayden, Gavin, Kayla and Colton Wayne.

Services are 12 noon Saturday, April 26, 2008 at Glenn Funeral Home with Drs. Paul Strahan and Herschel Morgan officiating followed by entombment in Rosehill Cemetery. Visitation will be from 2-8 on Friday and after 10 A.M. on Saturday at the funeral home.
