Walter Leon Nesmith, 77, of Owensboro, went to be with his Lord on Sunday, November 5, 2017 at Owensboro Health Regional Hospital. He was born June 30, 1940 in Daviess Co. to the late Walter Lee and Theresa Ambs Nesmith. Leon had been attending the By His Side Fellowship Church and had been a gospel singer and sang in a couple of Gospel groups at one time. He had served as a missionary and minister in several states, but most importantly, served the Wesleyan Indian Mission in South Dakota. He had attended God's Bible School in Cincinnati, had worked as a type setter and printer for numerous businesses and missions including the Evangelical Bible Mission in Summerfield, Florida where he was also their minister. Leon had worked as a fuel truck driver for Quality Oil Co., made deliveries for the Canteen Service Co., and painted homes with his brothers. He also was preceded in death by his brothers, Phillip and Ernest Nesmith.
Surviving are his former wife of 35 years, Dorcas Nesmith of Philpot, his six children, Donna Blair and husband Roger of Richland, IN, John Nesmith and wife Cindy of Richland, Mark Nesmith of Owensboro, Joe Nesmith and wife Sherry of Philpot, Nathanael Nesmith and wife Shelly of Masonville, and Kelly Nesmith of Owensboro, nine grandchildren, Tabitha Frazer, Amber Nichols, Sarah Witty, Kimberly Nesmith, Christopher Nesmith, Chance Nesmith, Chad Nesmith, Alyssa Nesmith, and Kara Nesmith, several great grandchildren, and two sisters, Pat Rhoades of Owensboro and Rena Canary of Sorgho.
Services will be Noon Saturday, November 11, at Glenn Funeral Home and Crematory with burial following in Friendship Baptist Church Cemetery in Daviess Co. Visitation will be from 2:00-8:00 P.M. Friday and after 10:00 A.M. Saturday at the funeral home.
