Walker Sweeney

Walker Sweeney, 80, of 2014 Merriewood Drive, Owensboro, died Tuesday, November 4, 2003, at his home. Born in Daviess County, Kentucky, a son of the late John A. and Emma Rose Norris Sweeney, he was a retired carpenter and a member of Lewis Lane Baptist Church. He helped build Apollo Heights Baptist Church, where he had served as chairman of the Building and Grounds Committee and was in charge of the nursery. A veteran of the US Army Signal Corps during WW II, Mr. Sweeney was in five major battles. His wife, Kathryn Sweeney, preceded him in death in 1998.

A son, Charles Sweeney of Owensboro; four daughters, Ruth Horton of Reynolds Station, Charlene Leonard and Zoe Fulkerson of Owensboro, and Betty Burcham of Thruston; three brothers, Herman Sweeney of Louisville and John Sweeney, and Albert Sweeney, both of Owensboro; a sister, Dorothy Willyard of Owensboro; 11 grandchildren and 7 great-grandchildren, survive him.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Friday at Glenn Funeral Home, where visitation will be from 2 until 8 p.m. Thursday and after 8:30 a.m. Friday. Burial will be in Owensboro Memorial Gardens.

Expressions of sympathy may take the form of contributions to the memorial funds of Lewis Lane Baptist Church and First Freewill Baptist Church.
