Walker Earle Meacham, 92, of Owensboro died Saturday, January 21, 2017. He was born August 16, 1924 in Memphis, TN, the son of William Earle and Muriel Moore Meacham (Weisiger). He served for three years in the Army Corps of Engineers during WWII, including one year in the ETO, and was a Master Sergeant when discharged in 1946. He graduated from the University of Tennessee in Knoxville, with a BS degree in Mechanical Engineering.
Walker was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 61 years, Shirley Schroll Meacham. They were married at Grace-St. Luke's Episcopal Church in Memphis on July 8, 1950.
He moved to Owensboro in 1950 as an employee of Texas Gas Transmission Corp. He became registered as a Professional Engineer in the Commonwealth of Kentucky in 1970, and retired from Texas Gas in 1987 as Supt. of Engineering Research.
A member of Trinity Episcopal Church, Walker sang in the choir for nearly 60 years and taught in the church school. He served on the Vestry and was Senior Warden twice. Walker was chairman of the Building Committee when the church building was constructed on Ford Ave. in 1963 and was chairman of the Long Range Planning Committee in the early stages of the 2007 building program. He was a member and chairman of the Dept. of Stewardship for the Episcopal Diocese of Kentucky and served two terms on the Diocesan Executive Council.
Walker was a member of the "Four Flames" Barbershop Quartet that won the Indiana-Kentucky District Championship in 1952. He was a member of the Community Concert Association and the Owensboro Orchestra Chorale in its early years. He was a Charter Member of the Cliff Hagan Boys and Girls Club and served as chairman of the Building Committee when the former Frederica Street facility was constructed on the site of the old YMCA building.
Walker was active in the Owensboro Ecumenical Cursillo Movement, serving on the group's board and as Lay Director. He was a founding member of the Residents Encounter Christ, a group that provided spiritual renewal programs for the women residents of the Dismas Charities of Owensboro. After retirement from Texas Gas, he was a volunteer tutor at the Longfellow School Adult Learning Program for ten years.
Walker is survived by his three children: Robert E. Meacham (Victoria) of Owensboro, Thomas S. Meacham (Patricia) of Bowling Green, Martha M. Janus (Richard) of Malden, MA; four grandchildren: William C. Meacham, Theo Meacham (Ann Malcolm), Samuel W. Meacham, and Emily C. Meacham; three great-grandchildren: Gale Monroe, Margaret C. Meacham, and Gustav W. Meacham; and by his sister-in-law, Anne M. Schroll. He is also survived by his loving companion, Patricia Borjesson.
The memorial service will be held at 1 PM Thursday, January 26 at Trinity Episcopal Church, 720 Ford Ave., Owensboro. Visitation will be held after 11 AM at the church. Interment will be at Trinity Columbarium.
