Virginia Starr Dobbs, 96, of Owensboro passed away Thursday, August 31 at her Fern Terra residence. Mrs. Dobbs was born July 17, 1921 in Atlanta, Georgia to the late David Homer Starr and Gladys Thrower Starr.
Virginia attended Atlanta's North Avenue Presbyterian School, then Wesleyan College, where she played on the women's basketball team, and graduated from the University of Georgia, where she was a member of Pi Beta Phi sorority. While in college, Virginia met Hal Dobbs, her future husband and life-long love. Virginia and Hal moved to Owensboro from Louisville in 1959 and raised their three children, Pamela, Bleckley and David. Virginia was a devoted wife and mother, a successful business executive at Western Kentucky Gas, an accomplished golfer, an avid bridge player and a beloved friend. She was a long-time member of Settle Memorial United Methodist Church, where she attended the Mary Lou Phillips Sunday School Class, and a member of the Married Ladies Reading Club. All who were fortunate enough to know Virginia were blessed by her gracious manner and kind heart.
Mrs. Dobbs also was preceded in death by her husband of 54 years, Hal Bleckley Dobbs; twin sister, Charlotte Starr Bates; two brothers, David Homer Starr, Jr. and James Thrower Starr.
Those left to cherish her memory include her daughter, Pamela Post and husband Charles of Harrisburg, Pennsylvania; two sons, Hal Bleckley Dobbs, Jr. and wife Sharon of Austin, Texas, and David Oliver Dobbs and wife Sylvia of Mill Valley, California; six grandchildren, Christopher Post, Elizabeth, Caroline, Ana Julia, Daniel, and Virginia Dobbs; and two sisters Nancy Starr Johnston of Saint Simons Island, Georgia, and Elizabeth Starr Towles of Atlanta, Georgia.
The service will be at noon on Friday at Glenn Funeral Home and Crematory with the Reverend Greg Rose officiating. Entombment will be at Owensboro Memorial Gardens. Visitation will also be Friday from 10:00 AM till noon at the funeral home.
