Virginia Welsh Clayton, "Aunt Ginny", 93, passed away Tuesday, June 21, 2011 at the Carmel Home. Born April 25, 1918 in Daviess County, a daughter of the late Patrick and Jessie Mae Montgomery Welsh, she was a member of St. Paul Catholic Church and the Legion of Mary. Following her marriage in 1960 to Joseph F. Clayton, a Sorgho farmer, she became a member of St. Mary Magdalene Catholic Church and was presented its Sophie Award in 2002. Mrs. Clayton was a graduate of St. Francis Academy, Jenkins Business College, and retired from General Electric following 36 years of service. Her interests included basketball and baseball with a particular fondness for the University of Kentucky, the University of Louisville, and the Atlanta Braves. She enjoyed watching daily mass on ETWN. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Joseph Clayton, and her sisters, Mayme Wethington, Lorene Hodskins, an infant sister Elizabeth Welsh, and a brother J.G. Welsh.
Surviving Mrs. Clayton are her brother, Edward Welsh, of Owensboro; and her nieces and nephews, Becky Jesop, Dennis, Dan, and Gayle Welsh, Doris Williams, Larry, Doug, Don, and Wayne Wethington, Susan Smith, Judy Head, Teresa Biggs, and Pat, Joey, Bernie, Scotty, and Bobby Hodskins.
The funeral mass for Mrs. Clayton will be at 10:00 a.m. Saturday at St. Mary Magdalene Catholic Church. Visitation will be from 3:00 pm until 7:00 pm Friday and after 8:30 am Saturday, where prayers will be said at 5:00 pm Friday. Burial will be in Mater Dolorosa Cemetery.
