Virgil Weir Meythaler

Virgil Weir Meythaler, 93, of Owensboro, Kentucky died Wednesday, September 21, 2011, at Hillcrest Health Care. He was born in Abingdon, Illinois, the last of nine children to Edward and Barbara Figi Meythaler, who preceded him in death. Mr. Meythaler received his Bachelor of Science degree in Accounting from the University of Illinois in 1941 and was employed by Arthur Andersen and Company in their Chicago office until entering officer training in the Navy in December of 1942. After receiving his commission he was assigned to the destroyer USS Ludlow operating in the Atlantic and European Theatres of War in the Mediterranean Sea. As a Lieutenant he was assigned as a naval gunfire officer attached to the 41st Army division in the Philippines. At the conclusion of World War II he was discharged from service and returned to Arthur Andersen. In 1949 he accepted a position with the newly formed Texas Gas Transmission Corporation. In 1980 he retired as Executive Vice President and Chief Financial Officer and moved to Vero Beach, Florida. In 1992 he and his wife Carol Velde Meythaler returned to Owensboro to be near their sons, Bruce and Robert.

A member of Settle Memorial Church he was active in the founding and building of the Owensboro Family YMCA. He served as the first president of The Free Clinic of Owensboro and served on the board of directors of The RiverPark Center. He was a member of the Constitutional Improvement Policy Council of the Kentucky Center for Public Issues and served with many other civic and charitable organizations.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 58 years Carol Velde Meythaler, his son, Scott Meythaler; his grandson, Robert Meythaler; and his great-grandson, Jakai.

Survivors include his sons, Bruce Meythaler and his wife Pam of Evansville, IN and Robert Meythaler and his wife Teri of Owensboro; grandchildren, Christopher Meythaler, Chelsea Meythaler McDonald, Darby Meythaler, Haydyn Meythaler, Katherine Meythaler, Nicholas Meythaler and Bradford Meythaler; and great-grandson, Javian.

Services will be held at 10 a.m. on Saturday in the chapel of Glenn Funeral Home and Crematory. Visitation will be from 5 p.m. until 8 p.m. on Friday at the funeral home. Entombment will be in Owensboro Memorial Gardens.

Expressions of sympathy may take the form of donations to the Robert Austin Meythaler Scholarship Fund established in his honor at either Settle Memorial United Methodist Church or Owensboro High School.
