Virgil R. Mayes, 65, of Bear Run Lane, Hartford, KY, passed away Sunday, November 6, 2005, at Owensboro Medical Health System. Born March 21, 1940 in Central City to the late Virgil and Dorothy Nell Miller Mayes, he was a member of Grace Bible Baptist Church, a Kentucky Colonel, and had served in the Army National Guard for 21 years including time during the Vietnam War. Mr. Mayes retired as a Foreman from the State Highway Maintenance Department after 28 years; he loved Christmas, picking on his grandchildren, playing practical jokes and was a professional worry wart.
Survivors include his wife of 28 years, Shirley Prindle Mayes; six children, Debra Tillotson (George) of Henderson, Margaret Payne (Ed) of Sadieville, Trina Morris (Sam) and Stephen Butler both of Owensboro, Della Bartley (Fred) of Beech Grove, and Michelle Mayes of Owensboro; nine grandchildren, Laura, Bobbi, Josh, Ethan, Rusty, Heather, Miles, Carrisa, Erin and Niel; three
great-grandchildren, Miguel, Reah and Shakara; two brothers, Bobby Mayes and Larry Mayes and one sister Terri Lynne Durbin.
Services will be held on Wednesday at 11:30 a.m. in the Glenn Funeral Home Chapel. Visitation will be from 2 p.m. until 8p.m. on Tuesday and after 9a.m. on Wednesday at the funeral home.
