Vird Aloysius Blandford, 90,Owensboro, died Tuesday, July 10, 2012 at the Carmel Home. He was born in Stanley, to the late John Randle and Agnes Lillian (Payne) Blandford. He was a charter member of Immaculate Catholic Church. He served in the European Theatre in World War II as mess sergeant in the 453rd Antiaircraft Artillery Battalion. He was a member of Knights of Columbus, barbequed at church picnics, cooked at fish frys, enjoyed baking and gardening. He retired as an accountant.
His wife, Johnny Mae (Sinclair) Blandford preceded him in death in 1978 as well as his siblings; Coleman, Ambrose,Joe, George, John R., Damian, Leo and Hubert, and Clarence Blandford, and Eleanor Swanson.
Surviving are his children; Shelia (Terry) Taylor of Owensboro, Sarah (James) Haynes of Brentwood, CA., Sharon Blandford of Marietta, GA., Kathy (Frank) McGourty of Cincinnati, OH., and Krista (Dan) Ringham of Owensboro, grandchildren; Erin (Jennifer) Taylor and Meredith (Tom) Reed both of Lexington, KY., Matthew McGourty of Cincinnati great-granddaughters; Adrienne Reed and Katherine Taylor, sisters; Marie(James H.) Ward and Mary Goetz and brother; Bernard Blandford, all of Owensboro, and many nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be 11:00 a.m. Saturday, July 14, 2012 at Immaculate Catholic Church with Fr. Tony Jones and Fr. Ray Goetz officiating. Burial will follow in Mater Dolorosa Cemetery. Visitation will be Friday from 4 to 7 p.m. with prayers at 7 p.m., and after 9:30 a.m. Saturday at Glenn Funeral Home and Crematory. Expressions of sympathy may take the form of donations to the Carmel Home New Expansion Project.
