Vicki Lyle Combs, Owensboro educator and community activist passed away at Centennial Medical Center in Nashville on Thursday, June 13, 2013 at the age of 58. Vicki was born in San Antonio, Texas. A magnum cum laude graduate of Kentucky Wesleyan College, she received a Masters of Art degree in English from the University of Kentucky. She was serving as an associate professor of English at Brescia University, teaching in the areas of professional and technical writing, women's literature, advanced composition, introduction to poetry, writing, Basic English, utopian literature and contemporary English literature. She had previously been associated with Kentucky Wesleyan College where she had served as Administrative Director of Career Development and Placement and co-operating teacher in the writing workshop program.
Her professional affiliations included editorial work with Callaloo, a journal of black literature, and the Green River Review, and membership in the National Association of Developmental English, The Kentucky Association of Developmental English, the College Placement Council, the Southern College Placement Association and the Kentucky College Placement Association
Mrs. Combs' community involvement included service on the advisory committee of PRIDE, mayoral appointments to the 2020 Vision Committee and the Recycling Committee, her neighborhood association, the Leukemia Society, Odyssey of the Mind, the Daviess County Historical Society, the Owensboro Museum of Fine Art, and the Preservation Alliance. She was preceded in death by her father, Arcy Lyle.
Mrs. Combs is survived by her husband of 33 years, Dr. John Combs; her mother, Lenette Amburgey Lyle; her brother, Joe Wayne Lyle; her sisters, Chris Hart, Lisa Mascenik, and Sandy Atkinson; and her nieces, nephews, and their families.
The celebration of the life of Vicki Combs will be at 4:00p.m Wednesday at Glenn Funeral Home and Crematory, where visitation will be from 12:00 noon until the time of service. Expressions of sympathy may take the form of contributions to the memorial funds of Brescia University, Kentucky Wesleyan College, of the American Cancer Society.
