Ventrice Gist Harl

March 18, 1915 — October 31, 2007

Ventrice Harl, 92, passed away Wednesday, October 31, 2007 at Hillcrest Healthcare. Born March 18, 1915 in Daviess County, KY, she was the fifth child of William Tabor and Katie Shore Gist; graduated from Owensboro High School January 20, 1934; and was one of the oldest members of Buena Vista Baptist Church, having joined in 1940. She married her soul-mate, Alney Austin Harl, on May 31, 1936. He preceded her in death on March 12, 1984. After her children were grown, she worked in the Special Diet kitchen at O-DC Hospital. She was an excellent cook, specializing in comfort food. Her favorite pastimes was crocheting and listening to gospel music. She was a great supporter of Billy Graham and listened to his television crusades throughout his career.

Mrs. Harl had four brothers serving overseas in the military during WWII. She was preceded in death by a 19 year old brother, Willett Coolidge Gist, who died in the D-Day invasion of Normandy, France and is buried there. Seven other brothers and sisters preceded her in death as did her beloved daughter-in-law, Nancy Saltsman Harl who died in an auto accident on March 19, 1975.

Survivors include her loving children, Mary Harl, Freddie Harl, & Brenda Hall and her husband, Malcolm, all of Owensboro. Grandchildren are Alan Harl & wife, Kelly, of Cecilia, KY; Karen Leach & husband, Scott, of Owensboro; Amy Turley & husband, Stan, of Maceo; and Julie Harris & husband, Chris, of Morgantown, KY. She also has great-grandchildren: Taylor & Chelsea Harl of Cecilia; Ron Lee Harl & wife, Christi (parents of the only great-great-grandchild, Dawson); Bobby Meeker III of Owensboro; Kaleb Parker & Logan Harris of Morgantown; and Austin & Abigail Turley of Maceo. Her step-son is Dwight Gene Hammer Harl & wife, Joann of Owensboro. Step-grandchildren are Vickie Henderson & Steve Harl of Owensboro and Brian Hall of Louisville. Step-great-grandchildren are Leigh Ann & Michael Henderson of Florida and Chloe & Seldon Gaines-Hall of Louisville. Her only surviving brother is Robert K. Bob Gist, of Owensboro. She has numerous nieces and nephews in Owensboro and throughout the U.S.

Services are 1 P.M. Friday, November 2, 2007 at Glenn Funeral Home with Paul Gatewood officiating, followed by burial in Rosehill Cemetery. Visitation is from 10 a.m. until the time of service.
