Veachel Franklin Straney

October 23, 1923 — September 8, 1945

Staff Sergeant (SSgt). Veachel F. Straney, 21, a native of Daviess Co., died September 8, 1945, in a military plane crash on his way home from serving in World War II. His plane crashed into a mountainside in the Irian Jaya Region in Indonesia. During the war, he served as a radioman for the U.S. Army Air Corps. He was a member of the Sorgho Baptist Church and enjoyed hunting, fishing, and doing things on the family farm.

Surviving at the time of his death and now deceased were the following family members, his parents, Arthur Lee and Chloe Straney of Calhoun, six brothers, Arthur Lee Straney of Owensboro, Charles William Straney of the U. S. Army, Herman Glenn Straney of the U. S. Navy, Steve Straney, Harry Douglas Straney, and Aaron Hugh Straney, all of McLean Co., and a sister, Coletta Straney of McLean Co.

Surviving today are four sisters, Dorothy Gossett of Owensboro, Margaret Brooks and Mary Bibb, both of San Antonio, Tx., and Joyce Hayes of Niceville, Fl.

After almost 58 years, funeral services for SSgt. Straney will be Saturday, July 26, at 2:00 P.M. at Glenn Funeral Home Chapel. Burial will follow, with full military honors from Ft. Campbell, in the Rosehill Cemetery in Owensboro. Visitation will be from 1:00 till 2:00 P.M. Saturday at the funeral home.
