Thomas K. Whitten

Thomas K. "Red" Whitten, 85, of Owensboro passed away on Friday, August 23, 2013 at Owensboro Health Regional Hospital. He was the son of the late James C. "J.C." and Mary Grace Whitten.

Tom served in the U.S. Army from 1944 - 1957 and his military career included World War II and the Korean Conflict. He spent much of his time in Germany and traveled with the Army Skeet Shooting Team for three years. Tom received the following awards for bravery and gallantry in action: Silver Star, Purple Heart, Presidential Unit Citation, World War II Victory Medal, Army of Occupation Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Korean Service Medal, Combat Infantryman Badge 1st Award, Expert Infantryman Badge, United Nations Service Medal, Honorable Service Button WWII and Parachutist Badge.

Tom continued to serve his community as a firefighter before becoming employed at Green River Steel. He retired when the plant closed. He was a member of Blessed Mother Catholic Church. Tom was an avid knife collector and dealer. He belonged to related clubs and sold his knives at many gun and knife shows through the years.

He was preceded in death by two sisters and a brother.

Tom is survived by his wife of 61 years, Juliana Whitten; daughters, Debra (Rick) Martin of Evansville, IN, Mary Anne (Mike) Mountain of Owensboro, Maureen (Brian) McDonald of Versailles, KY, and Allison (Jeff) Seymore of Princeton, KY; sons, Thomas (Brooke) Whitten of Noblesville, IN, James (Tracy) Whitten of Nicholasville, KY and Michael (Kate) Whitten of Shelbyville, KY; Grandchildren, Bill Fry, Jr., Matthew (Lisa) Jones, Chelsea and Hannah Zingg, McKenzie and McCabe Cordell, Madelyn McDonald, Sydney, Michael, Bren, Sarah, Thomas, Sophia, Annamarie, Sue Ann Therese, Juliana Hope, Ethan (Lauren), Evanne and Trey Whitten, Jimmy and Haley Goff, Brett Seymore, Alex, Camilla and Dusty Whitten; Great-grandchildren, Natalie Padgett, Annabelle Eikens, Cassius and Silas Jones and Camden Whitten

The funeral mass will be at 10 AM on Monday at Blessed Mother Catholic Church. Fr. John Meredith will officiate. Burial will be at Resurrection Catholic Cemetery. Visitation will be on Sunday from 2-5 PM (with prayers at 4 PM) at Glenn Funeral Home and Crematory.
