Thomas Mitchell Payne

Thomas Mitchell Payne, 85, of Maceo passed away Monday, June 1, 2026, under the care of Hospice and Palliative Care of W. Kentucky. The Daviess County native was born August 31, 1940, as one of 18 children to the late James Carl Payne and Mary Leora Head Payne. Mitchell graduated from St. Williams High School with the class of 1958. Being very charismatic, he was a successful salesman for most of his life with Davis Distributors. Mitchell was an avid vegetable gardener, growing up to 200 tomato plants at a time which he sold from his vegetable stand by the roadside. He enjoyed playing pool and the guitar with his buddies.

In addition to his parents, Mitchell also was preceded in death by a daughter, Paula Michelle Payne and his brothers, Robert, Matthew, Gilbert, Sterman, Herman, Wayne, Donnie, and Marvin Payne.

Those left to cherish his memory include his wife of 64 years, Paula Evans Payne; children, Jason Payne (Sharon) of Sellersburg, IN, Shannon Mattingly (Scott) of Maceo, Vicki Gaskin of Owensboro, Dr. Keith Payne (Dani) of Chapel Hill, NC, Brad Payne of Maceo, Erik Payne (Ellen) of Lexington, and Mark Payne (Tatt) of Laurel, MD; siblings, Glen Payne, Dorothy Horn, Ruth Zachary, Jane Ralph, Chris Payne, Kevin Payne, Denny Payne, Charles Payne, and Phil Payne; 14 grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren; a host of nieces and nephews.

The funeral service for Mitchel Payne will be 10:00 am Thursday, June 4 at Glenn Funeral Home and Crematory. Visitation will be Wednesday from 4:00 until 7:00 pm and Thursday from 9:00 am until the time of the service. Burial will be in Owensboro Memorial Gardens.
