Suzanne Murphy Coomes, 82, of Owensboro, passed away Monday, October 30, 2017 at her home surrounded by her family. Born in Owensboro on June 18, 1935, she was the daughter of the late Michael Richard and Mary Frances Riney Murphy. Suzanne was also preceded in death by brothers, Walter "Moose" Murphy and Billy D. Murphy, and sisters-in-law, Elizabeth "Gibby" Murphy and Georgetta Murphy.
Suzanne was a 1953 graduate of Owensboro Catholic High School and worked at General Electric and McAtees until she married the love of her life, Joseph "Bucky" Coomes, in 1958. She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, friend and neighbor. Suzanne was a member of Blessed Mother Catholic Church and a past member of St Martin Church and St Stephen Cathedral. She had a deep devotion to her Catholic faith, attended daily mass and was a promoter of the Miraculous Medal Society. She was an avid golfer and tennis player; loved flowers and birds; watching her grandchildren play sports; and cooking breakfast every Sunday for her family. Everyone was welcome at Gran and Daddy Bucky's for breakfast. She was kind, loving and really enjoyed people.
Surviving are her husband of almost 60 years, Joseph "Bucky" Coomes; her daughters, Karen Ott of Brentwood, TN, Sharon (Carroll) Ray of Atkinson, NH, Kimberly (Rick) Hayden of Owensboro, Stacy (Craig) Jones of Paducah, and Susan (Don) Howard of Owensboro; Also surviving are sisters, Mary Bea (D.B.) Blanford of Owensboro and Rose Bartley of Newbury Park, CA; a brother, Mort (Barbara) Murphy of Owensboro; sisters-in-law, Joyce Alvey and Jane Rowland; and brothers-in-law, Donnie Coomes and Ronnie Coomes. Grandchildren surviving are Roswell Ott, John Michael Ford, Justin Ford, Kristin Ford, Brent (Stephanie) Hayden, Danielle Hayden, Blake (Rachel) Hayden, Tess Hayden, Jessica Jones, Michaela Jones, Logan Cecil and Jacob Cecil and great-grandchildren, Robert James Nickerson IV and Finn Michael Hayden along with numerous nieces and nephews.
Funeral Mass will be 10 a.m. Thursday, November 2, 2017 at St. Stephen Cathedral with Revs. Jerry Riney and Mike Clark officiating followed by entombment in Resurrection Cemetery. Visitation will be from 3-7 p.m. Wednesday and after 8:30 a.m. on Thursday at Glenn Funeral Home and Crematory. The Rosary will be said at 6 p.m. on Wednesday evening at the funeral home.
