Stewart Benton Elliott, of Owensboro, KY, died Thursday May 21, 2009, at his residence surrounded by his family. Born in Owensboro in 1942 to the late Barney and Wilma Greenwalt Elliott; Stewart played football at Morganfield High School, then received a football scholarship to Vanderbilt University where he played football for two years, he returned to Kentucky Wesleyan College from which he graduated and then attended the University of Louisville Law School. He came back to Owensboro and entered into practice with the Rummage Law Firm after leaving the law firm he shared an office with Larry Harrington. He served twelve years as a Federal Magistrate, was the attorney for planning and zoning for 30 years, had written the bylaws for the Diabetes Coalition in Daviess County, was a member of the Owensboro Country Club Board and the Daviess County and Kentucky Bar Association. Stewart was a member of Settle Memorial United Methodist Church and attended Community of Christ Church. His hobbies included golf, fishing, tennis, raising four girls and having fun!
Survivors include the love of his life, best friend and wife of 46 years, Nell Elliott; daughters, Carol Lee Young, Ann Elliott and her partner Debbie Barley, Mary Elliott Currie and Patsy Duke and her husband Richard all of Owensboro; grandchildren, Elliott Young, Nicole "Niki" Currie, Stewart Currie, Jane Dawson Shelton, Michael Shelton, and Tristan Eleanor Duke; brothers, Dr. Barney Elliott and his wife Carolyn of Owensboro, Jerry Elliott and his wife Carolyn of Owensboro, and Dr. Robert Elliott and his wife BJ of Louisville; sister, Jodie Elliott Hanson and her husband Fritz of Elizabethton, TN.
Services will be held on Saturday at noon in the Glenn Funeral Home Chapel. Visitation will be from 2 p.m. until 8 p.m. on Friday and after 10 a.m. on Saturday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Rosehill Cemetery.
The family would like to extend a special thank you to Dr. Robert Schell, Dr. Jeffery Hofer and his nurses, the nurses in Dialysis, The Wound Care Center, and Hospice.
Expressions of sympathy may take the form of donations to the Diabetes Coalition and Community of Christ Church.
