Steven Ashley Mackey, 69, of Utica, passed away on August 17, 2026. He was born on January 29, 1957, to the late Frank Ashley and Mary Jo Gray Mackey. He was a hardworking man who loved his family, his farm, and the life he had built there.
The farm was a big part of who Steven was. He enjoyed taking care of his cattle, working around the property, and spending time on his tractor. If he was stressed, that was usually where he went. He would hop on the tractor, get to work, and clear his head. He also loved sitting on the back porch swing and simply looking out over the farm. It was home, and there was nowhere he would rather be.
For Steven, hard work came naturally. He spent years working in the oil fields alongside his dad and little brother, Charlie. He worked his entire adult career at Southern Tank Manufacturing in Owensboro Ky and retired after 43 years. His family describes him as the toughest man they knew. A true man’s man. It was also rare to see him without a hat on his head and chewing tobacco close by.
He loved history, especially the Civil War. Trips to Virginia to visit historic sites were some of his favorite vacations, and just a few months ago he had the chance to visit Gettysburg. He could spend hours taking it all in. Steven also enjoyed Cincinnati Reds baseball and UK basketball.
He had a soft spot for his dogs, especially Rita Marie, and he loved the traditions that brought everyone together. There were double dates at Dairy Queen and, every year, a big party with family and neighbors. Those parties usually included plenty of laughter and lip-sync performances, which became part of the fun everyone looked forward to.
For all the things Steven enjoyed, family came first. Always. He loved them deeply and was happiest when the people he cared about were close by.
He was preceded in death by his son, Benjamin; sister, Judy Hill; and sister-in-law, Debbie Mackey.
Steven is survived by his wife, Renee Mackey; his sons, Matthew Greenlee and his wife, Wendy, Anthony Greenlee and his wife, Sabrina, Daniel Pogue, and Greg Mackey and his wife, Ashley; grandchildren, Keeley, Madison, Matthew, Drake, and Elizabeth; sister, Patricia Jo Mackey; brother, Charles Raymond Mackey; cousins, Chuck and Kim Mackey; and many nieces, nephews, cousins, extended family, and friends who meant so much to him.
The funeral service for Steven will be held at 2:00 pm Saturday, August 22, 2026, at Glenn Funeral Home and Crematory. Visitation will be from 11:00 to 1:30 on Saturday.
