Sterling Kirk Johnson

Sterling Kirk Johnson, 94, of Owensboro died on Thursday, September 1, 2016. She was born in the heart of Bourbon country in Maud, Kentucky. Sterling was a graduate of Springfield High School and attended Spencerian Business College and Kentucky Wesleyan College. A resident of Owensboro since 1945, Sterling was an active member of Settle Memorial United Methodist Church, Mary Lou Phillips Sunday School Class, Kentucky Dental Auxiliary, Women's Guild, Home and Garden Club, and the Friendship Force of Western Kentucky.
Sterling's interests included golf, tennis, bridge, and travel. She enjoyed meeting numerous people around the world through her trips to many countries with the Friendship Force. She also hosted and entertained a number of domestic and foreign visitors to Owensboro through the Friendship Force.
Sterling was a daughter of the late Lloyd and Angelyn Parrish Yates. She was preceded in death by her first husband, Dr. Charles Triplett Kirk, a dentist and real estate developer, in 1960, and her second husband, James H. Johnson, in 1994. Sterling was also preceded in death by two brothers and a sister.
Sterling is survived by her daughter, Jan Ann Scott (David); her son, Jeffrey Lloyd Kirk (Kathy); her granddaughters, Sterling Scott Burton (Chase) and Caroline Kirk Salomon (Jon); her great-grandsons, Triplett Baxter Burton and Paxton McGee Burton; and her sister, Beatrice Hinsch.
The family would like to thank the loving caregivers at One Park Place and Hermitage Care and Rehabilitation for their kind and attentive service to Sterling in her last years of life.
The funeral service will be at 12:00 p.m. Tuesday, September 6 at Glenn Funeral Home and Crematory. Visitation is from 10:00 a.m. until 12:00 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home. A private burial will be in Rose Hill Cemetery.
Expressions of sympathy may take the form of donations to the Memorial Fund of Settle Memorial United Methodist Church, 201 East 4th Street, Owensboro, KY 42303 or to Kentucky Wesleyan College, 3000 Frederica Street, Owensboro, KY 42301.
