Stephen Lance Powers, 40, of Owensboro, Kentucky, passed away on July 3, 2026.
Born on July 9, 1985, in Owensboro to Stephen Cary and Terri Sue Schwartz Powers, Lance was a sweet, quiet boy with a big heart and an endless curiosity for how things worked. He loved to tinker, a trait he inherited from his father and grandfather. Introduced to computers by his dad at a young age, Lance quickly developed a passion that would shape the course of his life. What began as curiosity grew into an extraordinary talent, and through determination and countless hours of self-study, he became an exceptionally gifted software engineer.
Throughout his career, Lance lived in both Houston and Austin, Texas, where he served in senior engineering roles with leading organizations. His expertise in systems engineering, automation, and infrastructure design helped improve performance, strengthen security, and save organizations millions of dollars through innovative solutions. A passionate advocate for open-source technologies, he earned the admiration of colleagues for his intelligence, creativity, leadership, and remarkable ability to solve even the most complex technical challenges.
For all the success he found in his profession, Lance will be remembered most by those who loved him for the person he was. Quiet by nature and thoughtful in his own way, he possessed a good heart that remained evident even through life's challenges. He never lost his curiosity or his desire to learn, and he delighted in passing that curiosity on to his son, his nieces, and others who shared his interest in technology.
Lance was preceded in death by his fun-loving father, Stephen Cary Powers. He is survived by his loving mother, Terri Sue Schwartz Powers; his beloved son, Stephen Gage Powers; his devoted sister, Erica (Mike) Jones; his cherished nieces, Kaila (Jacob) Temple, Kaylynn (Daniel) Henson, and Katie Jones; and his precious great nieces and nephews, Keela Temple, Karlee Temple, Mava Harley, and Holden Henson.
