Stella Ray Jones Carter, 82, of Owensboro, went home peacefully to be with the Lord on Tuesday, April 18, 2017 at Hermitage Care and Rehabilitation Center. Stella was the only child of the late Wilbur Eugene and Stella Ray Revlett Vanover.
Stella was a devoted General Electric employee for 37 years and also served as a Union Steward. In 1989, she was honored with the company wide General Electric Employee of the Year Award. She was the only hourly employee to have ever received this award.
When Stella loved to do something, she gave it her all. This was especially true when she was preparing for Christmas, all year long, finding deals at Macy's or cheering on her favorite basketball team, the Kentucky Wildcats. She had a passion for gardening and flowers. She brightened the entire neighborhood with her colorful displays wherever she lived. She was strengthened and inspired by praising her Lord at Christ Community Church. You could often hear her singing hymns in the pews with a radiant smile on her face or find her volunteering for her church.
Stella is also preceded in death by her grandparents, Henry and Della Vanover of Rumsey and her late husbands, William L. Jones of Owensboro and Richard H. Carter of Owensboro.
Surviving are her children, Cindy Matthis and husband Sam of Owensboro, William Timothy Jones and wife Brenda of Niceville, Florida, Marla Jones Stamm of Newburgh, IN, step-son Ricky Carter, Jr. and wife Betty of Livermore, grandchildren, Amy Matthis, Michael Rickard, Lora Wellman, Samantha Matthis, Kimberlee Kimbrel, Christy Saunders, William (Billy) Jones, Samantha Hall, Ian Stamm, Maxwell Stamm, Malea Carter, Hank Carter, and 13 great grandchildren.
Services will be 2:00 P.M. Saturday, April 22, at Glenn Funeral Home and Crematory. Burial will follow in New Cypress Presbyterian Church Cemetery in Sacramento. Visitation will be from 3:00-8:00 P.M. Friday and from 12:00-2:00 P.M. Saturday at the funeral home.
