She graduated from Central High School in Memphis in 1947 and from the University of Tennessee in 1950. On July 8 of that same year, she and Walker E. Meacham were united in Holy Matrimony at Grace St. Luke's Episcopal Church in Memphis. They moved to Owensboro later in July of 1950, where they raised their family and became involved in their church and in various community activities. They were one month short of being married for 61 years.
For several years, Shirley helped lead a Girl Scout troop at the Boulware Center Mission. She taught in the Church School at Trinity Episcopal Church for over thirty years; she was a participant and a leader in the Ecumenical Cursillo Movement of Western Kentucky, and in the Residents Encounter Christ program which brought Christian programming to the women residents of the Dismas Charities facility here in Owensboro. She was a founding member of the Owensboro Daughters of the King. Shirley was an avid tennis player and loved watching the tournaments on television.
Surviving is her husband, Walker; her sister, Anne M. Schroll of Owensboro; their children, Robert E. (Vicki) of Owensboro, Thomas S. (Patricia) of Bowling Green, and Martha M. Janus (Richard) of Malden, MA; four grandchildren: William C. Meacham, Anne Constance Meacham, Samuel W. Meacham, and Emily C. Meacham; and two great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 10:30AM on June 10, 2011, at Trinity Episcopal Church, 720 Ford Avenue. Her ashes will be interred in the columbarium at Trinity Church. There will be a reception in the Parish Hall following the interment.
Expressions of sympathy may be made to Trinity Episcopal Church, 720 Ford Avenue, and to the Residents Encounter Christ, c/o Mrs. Pat Borjesson, 11A Quail Ridge Court, Owensboro 42303.
The family gives special thanks to the staff of Hospice of Western Kentucky for their care and attention during these last times.
