Shirley Horrell Leonard

Shirley Horrell Leonard, 87, of Philpot joined her husband Thomas "Tom" Leonard in heaven on Tuesday, November 11, 2014 from the Heartford House. Tom passed away July 26, 2014. Also preceding her in death were her parents, Albert and Frances Head Horrell, her brothers George William Horrell and Todd Horrell, and her sister Margaret "Dolly" Mattingly.

Shirley had been a beautician for 21 years and then served as Postmaster at Philpot for 21 years. She served as past president of the League of Kentucky Postmasters and on the National Board of Postmasters. A member of Dawson Baptist Church she taught Sunday school and sang in the choir. She had also been a member of the Philpot Nite Gals Homemakers Club, the Business and Professional Women's Club which she served as president, and the Daviess County Booster's Club which she served as president. She was a Democratic Committee member, a Kentucky Colonel appointed by Governor Wendell Ford, and a Girl Scout leader.

She is survived by her son, Thomas G. Leonard (Carmelita) of Philpot; her daughters, Lisa F. Leonard of Philpot and Barbara Foster Kirker (Tommy) of Pelham, AL; her grandson, David Foster of Pelham, AL; several step grandchildren and great-grandchildren; her brothers, Benny Horrell (Judy) of Owensboro and Robert Lee Horrell (Peggy) of Atlanta; her sisters Rachel Sandidge and Ann Gibson, both of Owensboro, her sister-in-law Ann Allison Horrell of Lake Malone, and many nieces and nephews.

A celebration of the lives of Shirley and Tom, officiated by Rev. Craig Bratcher, will be at 11:00 a.m. Friday at Dawson Baptist Church. Visitation will be at Glenn Funeral Home and Crematory from 2:00 until 7:00 p.m. Thursday. Expressions of sympathy may take the form of contributions to the Heartford House or Dawson Baptist Church.
