Shirley Blair Coomes, 85, of Owensboro passed away Friday, February 13, 2026, at Owensboro Health Regional Hospital. The Breckinridge County native was born January 27, 1941, to the late William McKinley Blair and Bessie Sanders Blair. Shirley graduated from Fredrick Fraize High School as a member of the National Honor Society. She was a devoted mother and homemaker raising her children while also volunteering often at their school when needed. Shirley was active with the Cub Scouts as a den mother and the Owensboro-Ohio County Beagle Club. Being an avid reader, she was very intelligent and outgoing, never meeting a stranger. Shirley and her husband loved to travel in their motor home, going to forty-nine out of fifty states (excluding Hawaii) and traveling to Alaska four times.
In addition to her parents, Shirley was also preceded in death by her husband of 62 years, Thomas E. Coomes in 2021; brothers, Freddie Blair and Ed Blair; son-in-law, Chris Carrico; daughter-in-law, Martha Coomes.
Those left to cherish her memory include her daughter, Karen Carrico (Bill Carlock) of Owensboro; four sons, Pat Coomes of Cadiz, Mark Coomes (Yvonne) and Charles Coomes (Pam) both of Owensboro and Robert Coomes of Kitts Hill, Ohio; 8 grandchildren, Tiffany Coomes, Sara Coomes, Megan Coomes, Brittany Coomes, Cody Coomes, Tyler Coomes, Kelsey Carrico, and Kayla Carrico; ten great grandchildren; siblings, Earl Blair, Charles Blair (Ogee), and Jean Stewart; several nieces and nephews.
The funeral Mass will be 2:00 pm Wednesday, February 18 at Blessed Mother Catholic Church. Visitation will be Tuesday from 4:00 until 7:00 pm at Glenn Funeral Home and Crematory. Entombment will be Wednesday in Resurrection Cemetery.
