Shirley Pauline Thomas Bruner

November 13, 1939 — September 6, 2014

Shirley Pauline (Thomas) Bruner, 74, of Owensboro, was surrounded by her loving family as she went to be with the Lord on September 6, 2014. Shirley was born on November 13, 1939, in Owensboro, to the late Leonard and Anna Algier "Allie" Pierce Thomas.

Shirley grew up playing softball, basketball, and was a cheerleader for Philpot Elementary School and went on to graduate from Daviess County High School in 1958. On March 20, 1959 she married her high school sweetheart, Darrell Bruner, who was also her co-worker at Brabandt's Big 800 Grocery Store.
After following Darrell south during his National Guard enlistment, Shirley worked behind the counter for many years at the family business, Bruner's Collectables.

Shirley loved to travel. She and Darrell visited almost all the continental states and took numerous trips to Canada and Nova Scotia. During her trips she loved to collect paperweights, spoons, and bells from all the places she visited.

Shirley was a member of Hall Street Baptist Church where she could always be found taking care of her friends' and families' children in the nursery.

In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her three brothers; Benny C., Olvin and Daymon Thomas, and brother-in-laws Thurman Dawson and William "Pete" Bruner.

She is survived by her loving husband of 55 years Darrell Lee Bruner, Sr.; her four children, Kevin Bruner, his spouse Angela, and their two sons Alex and Kyle, Lisa Tompkins, and her daughter Kira, Lori Triplett, and her spouse George, and their four children, Maggie, Catherine, George, and David, and Darrell Lee Bruner, Jr. and his son Jarrod; sister, Berna Dean Dawson and sister-in-laws, Faye Thomas and Mary Ann Bruner; and many loving nieces and nephews.

Shirley's family would like to extend thanks to the staff of Owensboro Regional Health Hospital, Hillcrest Nursing and Rehab and Active Day, special thanks to Heartford House, and special thanks and gratitude to Mary Hillyard, Nancy Jones and Martha Ralph.

Expression of sympathy may take the form of donations to Hall Street Baptist Church Children's Ministries and The Heartford House.
