Sherman Leon Hatfield

July 15, 1933 — January 19, 2012

Sherman Leon Hatfield, 78, of Utica, died peacefully at his home on Thursday, January 19, 2012. He was born on July 15, 1933 in Daviess Co., KY to the late John and Stacy McIntosh Hatfield and grew up in Owensboro. He joined the National Guard and then the Army at an early age and defended his country in the Korean War, and was wounded in combat at which time, he received the Purple Heart. Sherman retired from Commonwealth Aluminum after many years of service. He was a lifetime member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, American Legion, Disabled American Veterans, AmVets, and the Paralyzed Veterans of America. He loved all dogs, birds, his horse, and chickens. He had quite the sense of humor and called himself "The Bird Man of McMahan". Other hobbies he had included gardening and playing the lottery. Sherman loved to make people laugh and would make up silly songs and poetry. He believed in helping others, and selflessly donated gallons of blood and plasma. He will be greatly missed by all whose lives he touched.

He was also preceded in death by a sister, Anna Boarman, and two brothers, Thomas Hatfield and John Reed Hatfield.

Hatfield of Owensboro, Margarite Reneer of Butler Co., and Ewanda Davis of Owensboro, several grandchildren and great grandchildren, and nieces and nephews.
