Sherman H. Coffey

Sherman H. Coffey, 95, of Owensboro, passed away Saturday, January 9, 2010 at Wellington Parc. Born October 7, 1914, he was the son of the late Willie Coleman and Susan Ellen Hancock Coffey. Mr. Coffey retired from Harkin Oil where he was Production Superintendent and was a member of the Masonville United Methodist Church where he taught Sunday School for 40 years. He was also a 64-year member of the Masonic Lodge and served as Master and Secretary of the Utica Lodge #742, and was a Kentucky Colonel. Mr. Coffey was devoted husband and father and friend. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of 70 years, Virginia Dillman Coffey in 2005, brothers, Elmer Coffey and Howard Coffey, and sisters, Abbey Coffey, Ethel Moseley, and Ella Chinn.

Surviving are his children, Darryl L. Coffey , Donna and C.A. Maurer, and Gay and Ben Spicer all of Owensboro; grandchildren, Kathryn Raymer, Leah Gaye Houghton, Lynette Clough, Sgt. Glenn P. Coffey, Natalie Powell, Kevin Spicer, Keith Spicer, and Ben Spicer II; step-grandchildren, Cheryl Zellers, Jeff Maurer, and Kim Jennings; 10 great-grandchildren; 3 great-great-grandchildren; and sisters, Ruth Ackerman of Conyers, GA; and Jimmie Marie Coffey Dillman of Louisville.

Services are 10 a.m. Wednesday, January 13, 2010 in the Chapel of Glenn Funeral Home and Crematory with Revs. Greg Wingo and Gary Ball officiating followed by burial in Owensboro Memorial Gardens. Visitation will be from 3-6 p.m. on Tuesday and after 9 a.m. on Wednesday at the funeral home.

Expressions of sympathy may take the form of donations to Masonville United Methodist Church, Hospice of Western Kentucky, or the Utica Masonic Lodge.
