Sandra Girvin, 70, of Owensboro died Saturday, November 19, 2011, at her residence. She was born in Owensboro to the late Edward (1996) and Nina Hopper Girvin (1989), graduated from Owensboro High School in 1959, Kentucky Wesleyan College in 1962 and had received her Masters and Rank 1 from Western Kentucky University. Ms. Girvin started teaching at Owensboro High School in 1962-1968 then moved to Southern Junior High School from 1968-1972 and finished her teaching career at Owensboro High School 1972-1997 where she taught math and her favorite class, history. She was very active during her teaching career, she sponsored the Young Historians at OHS and Southern in the 70's and 80's, sponsored the Young Democrats during the 90's, sponsored many trips to Gubernatorial and Presidential inaugurations, chaperoned bus trips to many OHS sporting events, was an officer on the Owensboro Education Association and served in the second district of KEA. Ms. Girvin loved the RiverPark Broadway series, was a fan of NASCAR and a life long supporter of OHS sports. She was also preceded in death by her sister, Linda Hix Bond in 1996 and her long time friend, Lawrence Salgren in 2002.
Survivors include her sisters, Nicole Girvin Woodward and her husband Byron and Candyce Girvin Swank and her husband Donnie all of Owensboro; nieces and nephews, Caren Hix Moore and her husband Kenneth of Mechanicsville, VA, Suzanne Hix Carr of Grifton, NC, Jessica Swank Peveler and her husband James of Indianapolis, Wes Woodward of Indianapolis and Ryan Woodward of Wilmington, DE; great nieces and nephew, Pamela Moore, Catherine Moore, Brittney Carr Beaty, Jenna Peveler, and James Peveler III; her beloved pug Winston and her cats.
Services will be 10 a.m. on Wednesday in the chapel of Glenn Funeral Home and Crematory. Visitation will be from 2 p.m. until 8 p.m. on Tuesday and after 8:30 a.m. on Wednesday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Elmwood Cemetery.
Expressions of sympathy may take the form of donations to Owensboro Public School Foundation.
