Samuel Morton Tanner, 84, passed away Friday, December 29, 2017 in the care of Hospice of
Western Kentucky. Mr. Tanner was a committed Christian and devoted member of Crosspointe Baptist Church, where he served as a deacon. He was an ardent supporter of his family, having missed very few of the sporting events of his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Even though a fan of Southern Gospel music, he attended his grandsons' Christian rock concerts. Born on the family farm in McLean county he grew up as a farm boy, which fostered his interest in tinkering with engines and his ability to fix anything. He retired from Alcoa Aluminum as a coal mill operator. Mr. Tanner was a veteran of the U.S. Army. When he wasn't involved with family activities or secretly mowing other's lawns, he enjoyed bowling and playing cards with family and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, Sam and Mary Lee Troutman Tanner; his brothers Truman Tanner, Sherril Tanner, and Sherman Tanner; and a sister, Lois Wells.
Mr. Tanner is survived by his wife of 60 years Alice Marie Clary Tanner; his children Glenn Tanner (Pam) of Jerusalem, AR, Larry Tanner (Lisa) of McLean County; Karen Midkiff, Jerry Tanner (Patty) and Greg Tanner (Beth), all of Owensboro; his grandchildren Logan Midkiff (Sarah), Zack Tanner, Nick Tanner (Tora), Jake Tanner, Jared Tanner (Davi), Jason Tanner (Natalie), Jodi McCarty (Nick), Jonathan Tanner (Rebekah), Sarah Tanner, Rachel Bailey (Travis), Brad Clark (Mandy), Brandon Clark, Becca Bogucki (Eric), Cameron Howard (Elisa), Andi Howard, Jayden Howard, Tyson Howard, and Keylan Howard; 26 great-grandchildren; his sister Juanita Eubank; and his brother-in-law Bill Clary (Linnie); and several nieces and nephews.
The funeral service for Mr. Tanner, officiated by Rev. Farrel Isenberg, will be 11:00 a.m. Wednesday at Crosspointe Baptist Church. Visitation will be from 2:00 until 8:00 p.m. Tuesday at Glenn Funeral Home and Crematory and after 9:00 a.m. Wednesday at the church. Burial will be in Owensboro Memorial Gardens.
