Ruth M. Alvey, 95, of Utica, passed away Sunday December 8, 2024, at Riverside Care and Rehabilitation Center in Calhoun, KY. She was born March 2, 1929, in Paducah, to the late Joseph and Mary Pauline Poat Wurth. Along with her parents, she is preceded in death by her husband, Joseph Harvey Alvey; and two brothers, Junior Wurth and Herman Wurth. Mrs. Alvey is survived by nine brothers and sisters. Magdalen Duncan; Alma McBride; Louis Wurth; Edward Wurth (Anna Jean); Martin Wurth (Vicki); Thersa Knott (Robert); Michael Wurth (Suzanne); Kathy Weldon (Gary).

Ruth is also survived by four daughters, two sons, a bounty of grandchildren, great grandchildren and one great, great, grandchild. Ruth’s offspring include: Bonny Jackson (Doug), Elizabeth Mangum, Patricia Alvey (Donald Henry), Sandra Carden (Stephen), Michael Alvey (Eva Mae), Joseph Alvey (Tamara); Thirteen grandchildren, John Jackson (Vivien Moses), Greg Mangum (Leigh), Mindy Smith, Amy Gingras (Jason), Melody Tollison (Jeff), Mason Green (Haven), Clayton Carden (Taylor May), Laura Carden Ilawan (Eric), Patrick Alvey (Ashley), Luke Alvey (Brittney), Lindsey Calloway (Kevin), Justin Alvey (Brittney), and Aaron Alvey (Kayla); Seventeen great-grandchildren, Kaya Jackson, Noah Jackson, Kylee Mangum, Abbie Mangum, Cooper Mangum, Shelby Smith Helms (Jordan), Hannah Smith, Eli Smith, Zach Tollison, Caleb Tollison, Conner Alvey, Alexandria Alvey, Christopher Alvey Payne (Abigail), Delaney Calloway, Aidan Alvey, Cassian Alvey, and Tristan Alvey; also one great-great-grandchild, Briley Garrett. 

Ruth worked as the fountain girl at Cain’s Drug Store in Morganfield, nurse’s aide at Mercy Hospital in Owensboro, and assistant for Doctor James Roby in Whitesville. She owned and operated a greenhouse with her husband Joe, and catered weddings for many couples across Daviess and Ohio counties. 

Her volunteer contributions were extensive. She served at St. Anthony Catholic Church where she volunteered with Religious Education, making bread with the first communion class each year, joining youth group activities, serving with the St. Vincent DePaul Committee and coordinated bereavement meals for parishioners and their families. Mrs. Alvey was awarded the Sophia Award for outstanding contributions to Saint Anthony’s Parish.

The family wishes to offer the most heartfelt thank you to those who helped care for Ruth in her declining years: Tina Fulkerson, Cheri Simmons and Gayla Stevens. 

All services will be held at Saint Anthony’s Parish in Utica on Friday December 13th. Private family visitation 9:00 am – 10:00 am, Public Visitation 10:00 am – 1:00 pm, Funeral Mass 1:00 pm - 2:00 pm, Burial 2:30 pm – 3:00 pm, Funeral Meal 3:00 pm - 4:00 pm.
