Dr. Ronald Ray Sommerfeldt, 69, of Owensboro, Kentucky passed peacefully on May 22, 2018
in the care of Hospice of Western Kentucky with his daughter, Alissa, and former wife, Susan,
at his side.
Ron was born on May 15, 1949 in Wausau, Wisconsin to Robert and Marie Sommerfeldt. At
ten-years-old, he already knew that he wanted to become a physician and graduated from the
University of Wisconsin Medical School in 1975. His specialty for more than 38 years was
emergency medicine, practicing most of those years across the Commonwealth. He was
board-certified in both emergency medicine and internal medicine.
Ron was happiest when he was blasting rock-n-roll or Bob Marley on his stereo, tinkering with
his collector muscle cars, or spending time with his daughter, Alissa. He was known for his
contagious laugh, quirky sense of humor and playing practical jokes on colleagues. He had
incredible compassion for people, often bringing donated toys for his littlest patients or helping
patients with prescription costs.
He is survived by his daughter Alissa, of Knoxville, TN, and brothers Joel (Debra) of Merrill,
Wisconsin, and Steve and James (Sherry), both of Green Bay, Wisconsin along with several
nieces and nephews.
A memorial visitation will take place at Glenn Funeral Home & Crematory, 900 Old Hartford
Road, Owensboro, Kentucky on Friday, May 25th, 2018 from 4 - 6 p.m., with the last half hour
dedicated to the sharing of memories. Ron was a jeans and t-shirt type of guy and hated
dressing up - therefore casual attire is not only welcomed, but encouraged.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Court Appointed Special Advocates of the Ohio
Valley.
