Roger G. Kaufmann, 70, of Philpot passed away Sunday, October 26, 2008 at Owensboro, Medical Health System. The son of the late Harold D. Kaufmann and Freida Gill Kaufmann, he was born in Niagara Falls, New York and studied to be a forest ranger in his home state before joining the United States Navy. At the time of his discharge two years later, his family had moved to Louisville and Roger had decided to pursue a career in nursing. He soon learned that the former Owensboro-Daviess Hospital School of Nursing was among the few schools at that time that would admit men into their programs and began taking classes in Owensboro. After meeting his soon-to-be-wife, Philpot native Jane Sublett, he settled here. Once a registered nurse, he began a 28-year career with the hospital, serving as the Supervisor of the Coronary Care Unit, the hospital's first employee health nurse, and managed the occupational health program. After he retired in 1995, Mr. Kaufmann continued his role in health care, working at the Plasma Center. An active and devoted member of Dawson Baptist Church, he served as a deacon, Sunday school teacher and church moderator. When he wasn't creating and harvesting vegetable gardens and working in the yard, the devoted father and grandfather spent most of his free time raising his children and plotting trips to see his grandchildren. Following his retirement, he enjoyed learning new computer programs and strolling around the neighborhood in the evening with his wife. His sister, Suzanne Williams, also preceded him in death.
His survivors include his wife of 44 years, Jane Sublett Kaufmann, his daughter Carol Kaufmann Enochs, her husband Kevin, and their children, Luke and Sara Clare, all of Alexandria, VA; and his son Steven R. Kaufmann and his wife Jill, of Lexington, KY.
Services, officiated by Rev. Craig Bratcher and Dr. Joe Thomas, are at 12 noon Wednesday at Glenn Funeral Home, where visitation will be from 4:00 until 8:00 p.m. Tuesday and after 10:00 a.m. Wednesday. Burial will be in Rosehill Cemetery. Expressions of sympathy may take the form of contributions to Dawson Baptist Church or the American Cancer Society.
