Robert D. Howell

October 18, 1920 — April 30, 2013

Robert D. Howell, 92, of Owensboro passed away Tuesday, April 30, 2013 at his home. Born in Biloxi, MS, a son of the late Hubert and Norma Miekley Howell, he attended the University of Cincinnati and retired from Texas Gas as a construction supervisor. Mr. Howell was a World War II veteran of the United States Army Air Corps, having served in the North Africa and European theatres with the 324th Group of the 316th Fighter Squadron. In recognition of his service, he was awarded the Middle Eastern Campaign medal with 5 battle stars, and the Army of Occupation Certificate of Merit. He was a member of Settle Memorial United Methodist Church, the Texas Gas Retirees, Preservation Alliance, American Legion Post 9, and was a volunteer for the Department of the Blind. He was preceded in death by his daughter, Nancy Lee Howell, in 1986, and grandchildren Savannah Marie Howell, Stephen Aaron Howell, and Meredith Holman Howell.

Mr. Howell is survived by his wife, Dorothy Jean Gabriel Howell, to whom he would have been married 70 years on the 17th of May; his sons, Robert Donald Howell, Jr. of Centreville, VA, Edward Gabriel Howell of St. Louis, MO, and Clifton Allan Howell of Jacksonville, AK; his daughter, Katherine Ada Howell of Owensboro; his grandchildren, Samantha Howell, Christina Marie Thompson, Elena Rachelle Lott, Robert Howell, III, Cole Howell, and Sarena Howell: his great-grandchildren Sophia Braun, Spencer Braun, and Sydney Braun; his brother, William K. Howell of Memphis, TN, and numerous nieces and nephews.

Services are 2:00 p.m. Saturday at Glenn Funeral Home and Crematory, where visitation will be from 12:00 noon until 2:00 p.m. Saturday. Burial will be in Owensboro Memorial Gardens. Expressions of sympathy may take the form of contributions to Settle Memorial United Methodist Church, Kentucky Wesleyan College, or Hospice of Western Kentucky.
