Robert Louis Hast

Dr. Robert L. Hast, 81, of Owensboro and Fairdealing, Kentucky died Tuesday, August 24, 2010, at Wellington Parc. He was born on August 21, 1929, to the late Lawrence and Dorothy Wilbanks Hast in Evansville, Indiana. He was one of the first Meade Johnson formula test babies, a 1947 graduate of Reitz High School and played on their baseball team carrying a .419 batting average. Dr. Hast attended Indiana University and was a graduate of their medical school, served his internship at St. Margaret's Hospital in Hammond, Indiana and his four year residency in internal medicine at the Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit, Michigan. He practiced internal medicine in Owensboro for 35 years. He spent three years as a captain in the Army following the Korean conflict and served as the only Doctor at camp AP Hill Virginia. Dr. Hast was a lifetime alumni member of Indiana University and lived and died with every football and basketball game. He admired Bobby Knight's skills in the game. Since the early sixties he had seats at mid court at the Sports Center and tried never to miss a Kentucky Wesleyan game home or away. He spent hours boating and waterskiing at Kentucky Lake where he had a home. A longtime Rotarian, he was the recipient of a Paul Harris Fellowship Award. Dr. Hast was preceded in death by his parents, and his only sister, Kathie who was born on his fifteenth birthday.

Survivors include his wife of 58 years, Carolyn Nenneker Hast; sons, Dr. John Hast and his wife Vicki of Owensboro, Dr. William Hast and his wife Eunice of London, KY, and Robert L. Hast, Jr. and his wife Holly of Owensboro; daughter, Lisa Gentry and her husband Ed of Utica; grandchildren, John Tyler Hast of Lexington, Leslie Hast Hill and her husband Jake of Nashville, TN, Bryan and Alisha McIntyre of London, KY, David Hast of Owensboro, Carrie Gentry and Will Gentry of Utica; and great-grandchildren, Jonathon and Justin McIntyre of London, KY.

Services for Dr. Hast will be private. As his final request he bequeathed his body to the University of Kentucky Medical School to help teach a new generation of physicians.
