Robert L. Englert, 85, of Owensboro passed away Saturday, February 6, 2016 at Hermitage Care and Rehabilitation Center. Bob Englert leaves behind an enviable legacy of a devoted family, treasured friends, and the fond respect of those whose lives he touched. He was born in Owensboro, a son of the late Hilary and Caroline "Carrie" Hayden Englert. Known to many as "Cotton", he graduated from St. Francis Academy, where he was a standout member of the basketball team. He attended St. Bernard Junior College in Cullman, Alabama on a basketball scholarship. In addition to basketball, he was recruited to play on the college's football team despite never having played the sport. Upon graduation, Bob returned to Owensboro to enroll at Brescia and marry the love of his life, Mary Joan Marrett. Within two years, he was a new father and a proud member of Brescia College's first graduating class of four students. Together, he and Joan raised a raucous brood of seven "cotton-tops", instilling in them life's most important lessons - love of family, the value of kindness and friendship, and the importance of placing others above self. Bob was the consummate gentleman, while also being known for his quick wit and unfailing sense of humor. His most treasured moments were those filled with the laughter of his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. He was most happy when his large clan was gathered under one roof. One of the first employees of Green River Steel, he retired after 33 years of service. He was a devout Catholic and member of The Immaculate Catholic Church.
Mr. Englert was also preceded in death by his brothers, Hilary Englert, Jr., Gene Englert, and Joe Englert; his sisters Lilly Wilson, his twin Betty Tichenor; and Martha Thompson, as well as his beloved daughter-in-law Jackie Reed Englert.
