Rita Askin Jennings, 83, of Owensboro, formerly of Hardinsburg, passed away on Sunday, March 17, 2013 at Owensboro Health Regional Hospital. She was born on September 24, 1929 in Breckinridge Co. to the late Morris Lewis and Cora Butler DeJarnette. While in Hardinsburg, she and her first husband, L. C. Askin, owned and operated the Western Auto Store and she also owned and operated Rita's Dress Shoppe. Rita had been a school bus driver for the Breckinridge Co. School System and a driver of the Bookmobile for the Breckinridge Co. Public Library. She was a member of the McMinnville United Methodist Church in McMinnville, TN where she and her second husband were members and lived for many years. She also enjoyed traveling, camping, was a Kentucky Colonel, and an avid U. K. basketball fan. Rita loved spending time with her grandchildren and great grandchildren. She was also preceded in death by her first husband, L. C. Askin in December of 1966, her second husband, Dr. Karon Jennings in July of 2012, and a daughter, Ginnie Askin in March of 1994.
Surviving are two daughters, Donna Lewis and husband Ron Board of Owensboro and Cora Lynne and husband Tony Roush of Orlando, FL, three grandchildren, Neil and wife September Board of Owensboro, Madeline and Elizabeth Roush of Orlando, two great grandchildren, Alex and Asher Board of Owensboro, two brothers, A. B. DeJarnette and wife Nell of Bowling Green , Marvin DeJarnette and wife C. J. of Port St. Lucie, FL, a sister, Kathy Whitmer and husband Bruce of Gainesville, FL, and several nieces and nephews. Rita also leaves behind all her wonderful friends at Park Regency.
Services will be 10:00 A.M. Friday, March 22 at Glenn Funeral Home and Crematory. Visitation will be from 2:00-8:00 P.M. Thursday and after 8:30 A.M. Friday at the funeral home. A graveside service will be held at Ivey Hill Cemetery in Hardinsburg at 1:00 P.M. Friday with burial following.
