Richard “Dick” Anthony Thomas, 90, of Owensboro, passed away Thursday, May 29, surrounded by his loving family. Born January 4, 1935, he was one of thirteen children born to the late Jesse and Pearl Thomas.
Dick was a devout Catholic and a loyal member of Saints Joseph and Paul Catholic Church. His faith was an integral part of his life. Dick, along with five of his brothers, are veterans of the U.S. Air Force, and one a U.S. Army veteran. During his time in the Air Force, he served as a mechanic and flew on many planes he worked on. His dedication to service was a testament to his strong sense of duty and commitment to his country.
Dick enjoyed a distinguished career as a superintendent in the construction industry. He first made his mark at Thompson Homes, where he was instrumental in the building of several houses in Thoroughbred Acres and virtually all the homes in Thoroughbred East. Later, he transitioned to Peter’s Construction, where he continued his dedication to quality and craftsmanship until his retirement. His admirable work ethic and respect from peers established him as a highly regarded figure in the field.
In retirement, Dick and his beloved wife, Dorothy, opened their hearts and home, welcoming two more children into their lives: Rosalyn Elizabeth Thomas, who currently resides in the Netherlands, and Rudy Thomas of Owensboro. Dick's love for his family was evident in many facets of his life. Known as a man of few words, he gained the profound respect of those around him; when he spoke, everyone listened. He was also an excellent listener, offering support and understanding to those who sought his counsel. Dick took immense joy in traveling and camping with his children, creating lasting memories filled with laughter. He found solace in cultivating a beautiful array of flowers, with his passion for roses particularly notable. Dick was a man of integrity and dedication, whose life reflected a commitment to his faith, profession and his family.
In addition to his parents, Dick was preceded in death by a grandson, Noah Thomas; siblings, Jesse Thomas Jr., Hillary Thomas, Jerome Thomas, Bill Thomas, Virginia Raley, Thelma Clark, Ralph Thomas and Marion E. Thomas.
Those left to cherish his memory include his wife of 65 years, Dorothy Thomas; sons, Rick Thomas (Tammie), Michael Thomas (Valerie), Mark Thomas and Greg Thomas, all of Owensboro; bonus children, Rosalyn Thomas, of the Netherlands, and Rudy Thomas, of Owensboro; siblings, Eddy Thomas, Lynn Thomas (Linda), Rosetta Funsch and Rita Ballard (Jody); grandchildren, Casey Hardesty (Ben), David Thomas (Eve), Kevin Thomas (Amy), Eric Thomas (Alyssa), Mandy Elmore (Dakota), Tyler Thomas (Dani) Jordan Thomas (Kensley), Erin Roberts (Charleston), Nathan Thomas, Jacob Thomas and Max Thomas; as well as 22 great-grandchildren-with two on the way.
