Richard D. Edwards

Richard Daniel Edwards, 66, of 1125 Griffith Ave., Owensboro, died Sunday, Oct. 30, 2005, at his home after a prolonged battle with progressive supranuclear palsy, PSP. He was born in Madisonville, the son of James Priest and Margaret Byrum Edwards. He was a graduate of Madisonville High School and a proud member of the 1956 undefeated championship football team. Retired in 2000 as president of Richard D. Edwards Mortgage Co., he concluded a 33-year career in the mortgage and banking industry. As a member of First Baptist Church, he was a member of the Fellowship Sunday school class. He was a graduate of Western Kentucky University, the Indiana University Savings and Loan Graduate School and University of Georgia School of Executive Development. He had served in the U.S. Army.
As an active member in the Owensboro community, he served as president of the Owensboro-Daviess County Chamber of Commerce, Owensboro Rotary Club and Owensboro Daviess County Preservation Alliance and served as chairman of Leadership Owensboro. His civic involvement also included serving on numerous boards, including Junior Achievement, Citizen Committee on Higher Education, Owensboro Museum of Science and Natural History, Family Y and the Owensboro Symphony.
He is survived by his wife of 43 years, Joyce Head Edwards; a son and his wife, Ross D. (Suzanne) Edwards of Nashville; and a daughter, Mary Kelly Edwards (Forrest) Speed of Atlanta; five grandchildren, Collins W. Speed, Emily C. Edwards, Bennett W. Speed, Eleanor (Ellie) B. Edwards and Mary Locke Edwards Speed; and a sister, Julia Edwards (Charles) Beal; and an aunt, Maymie Byrum Dorris of Madisonville.
Services are at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Nov. 2, at First Baptist Church. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. today and between 9 and 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Glenn Funeral Home. Burial will be in Owensboro Memorial Gardens.
