Richard E. “Rick” Castlen, 67, of Owensboro, went to his eternal reward Wednesday, December 6, 2023 from Owensboro Health Regional Hospital. He was born in Owensboro to the late Louis E. Castlen and Jean Castlen Rhinerson.
As a young man, Rick became a machinist and worked at ToolCo. and Green River Steel for many years. He went on to focus on his passion, farming with his family at Castlen Brothers Farms. Primarily grain farmers, they were recipient of many state awards and won national recognition for their exceptional corn and soybean yields.
Rick grew up at St. Pius Catholic Church, but in recent years he had become a member of Owensboro Christian Church. He enjoyed meeting his friends for coffee and breakfast at Madewell/Corner Cafe. Sunday mornings usually included Old South with family. Rick also enjoyed Sunday drives in hot rods and built a couple of his own, “Herman” and “Clyde”. Rick had recently ventured into woodworking and built a toybox for his youngest grandson. Family was important to him, and he will be dearly missed by many.
In addition to his parents, Rick was preceded in death by his step-father, Joe Rhinerson and a step-brother, David Rhinerson.
He is survived by his wife of forty-six years, Mary Hagan Castlen; daughters, Christy Crusenberry (Tom) and Sarah Castlen (Tim Weidner); a son, Michael Castlen; grandchildren, Tristin Crusenberry, Chaney Crusenberry, Michael A. Castlen, Grant Castlen and Royce Weidner; siblings, Sandy Morris (Danny), Gloria Boarman (Larry), Phillip Castlen (Debbie), and Ginger McBride (Jerry); step-siblings, Rhonda Jones, Sharon Ko, Teresa Tipton, Mark Rhinerson and Jeff Rhinerson; many nieces, nephews and great-nieces and nephews.
The funeral service will be at 1:00 PM, Saturday, December 9 at Owensboro Christian Church. Burial will be at Yellow Creek Cemetery. Visitation will be Saturday from 9:30 until the time of service at Owensboro Christian Church.
Memorial contributions may be made to St. Benedict’s Homeless Shelter, 1001 W 7th St, Owensboro, KY 42301 or Norton Children’s Hospital, 231 E Chestnut St, Louisville, KY 40202.
