Richard Nelson Anderson, Sr., 93, of Whitesville, passed away March 22, 2026, at home, surrounded by family. Born in Detroit, MI in 1933, his family moved to Owensboro in 1942. Richard went to Owensboro High School and played on the OHS Ohio Valley Championship team. He went to the University of Illinois to study architectural & mechanical engineering while also playing football. Richard was a member of SAE fraternity. He joined the Navy serving 4 years in Inchon, Korea and was a champion swimmer in the Navy, where he continued playing football. He married a wonderful woman, Sally Keller. He also went to Tri-State in Angola, Indiana.
Richard was a member of First Baptist Church of Owensboro.
He managed the V.E. Anderson plant in Bradenton, Florida eventually becoming president of V.E. Anderson. Richard had an aluminum extrusion facility in Rome, Georgia and built and designed the first fully automatic extrusion press and handling system. He went to work for Alcan and solved problems for Alcoa, Alcan, Keiser, Reynolds, Peco. Richard founded LSI in 1978. Hunter Douglas hired him in 1980 as their technical director and vice president of research and development where he built plants in Owensboro, Tupelo, MS, and Roxboro, NC. Hunter Douglas had offices in Owensboro, Montreal, Rotterdam, and Totowa, New Jersey which Richard managed.
He travelled to Europe, Africa, South America, Asia and Australia, eventually traveling around the world twice. Richard designed & made parts for the automotive industry, lawn furniture, commercial ceilings & facades, fenestration and window coverings.
He and his wife bought and restored Weatherberry, an Owensboro house built in 1840.
Richard raced 280 class inboard hydroplanes in the Carolina's, Louisiana and Miami. He enjoyed being a private pilot, snow skiing, and sailboats. What he enjoyed most was being a problem solver.
He is survived by his wife Sally, two brothers Norman Anderson and John Anderson, sister Katheryn (Forrest) Rice, three sons; Richard (Berdette) Anderson, John (Kathy) Anderson, Stuart Anderson, six grandchildren; Rachel (Miles) Mason, Richard (Sarah) Anderson III, Preston Anderson, Raye Troutman, Alexandra (Alexander) Jagoe, Erin (Ty) Anderson and eight great grandchildren.
Visitation will be Thursday, March 26, 2026, from 10:00 a.m. - 2:00 p.m. at Glenn Funeral Home and Crematory. A private graveside service will follow.
Expressions of sympathy may take the form of contributions to First Baptist church of Owensboro or charity of choice.
