Richard Anthony Alexander, 75, of Owensboro, passed away Tuesday, July 12 under the care of Hospice of Western Kentucky. He was born April 1, 1941 to the late John and Jane Shellman Alexander.
Richard was a member of St. Mary Magdalene Catholic Church where he attended daily mass and volunteered in many capacities, including upkeep of the property and assisting with bereavement meals. He was also a member of the Knights of Columbus. He worked as a union welder at W.R. Grace for more than thirty one years. In his early years he had also worked as a bulldozer operator in the oil fields. After retirement he thoroughly enjoyed interacting with the children he met while driving a school bus for eleven years. They called him "Papaw". Throughout much of his life Richard also had a part-time occupation and hobby of farming on the side. He also enjoyed camping, fishing, and traveling, especially out west.
He was also preceded in death by his brother, Joe Alexander.
Richard is survived by his wife of fifty-three years, Mary Jane; his daughter, Maria Daugherty and her husband Joe; son, Rick Alexander and his wife Angie, both of Owensboro; his grandchildren, Britney Ammon and her husband David, Mathew Alexander, Mari-Grace Alexander, T.J. Daugherty and his wife Chloe, and Luke Daugherty; great-grandchildren, Beau and Camryn Ammon; sister, Susie McMahan and her husband Jake of Mt Washington; brothers, Paul Alexander and his wife Patty of Hardinsburg, Harold Alexander and his wife Debbie of Louisville and Mike Alexander and his wife Janet of Westview; and many nieces and nephews.
The funeral mass will be at 10 AM Friday, July 15 at St. Mary Magdalene Catholic Church, Fr. Mark Buckner officiating. Visitation will be Thursday from 3 until 8 PM, with prayers at 3, at Glenn Funeral Home and Crematory. Visitation on Friday will be at church after 8:30 AM. Burial will be at St. Alphonsus Church Cemetery.
